The Deadlands biome is an ash-covered wasteland with blood-red water, smoldering grass blocks, lava pools and open pits nearly 40 blocks deep.
The entire biome is covered in ash blocks, even underwater, with scattered smoldering grass blocks on the land.
Surviving in the Deadlands is difficult because there is no dirt, no wood and no passive mobs. The threat of death by fire and lava is always present. But the red-as-blood water wants to eat you ( >:-D ) Thirst effect is applied here also.
As of version 1.2.1, the Deadlands are disabled by default. The mod developer stated on Reddit that he plans to remove the biome in the version of the mod that updates to Minecraft 1.7. (reference link)
